Anjalee is the region’s only Sri Lankan elephant, arriving from Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in 2015.
Anjalee has grown significantly in size since she arrived as an eight year old and is now similar in size to Burma. As a Sri Lankan elephant, Anjalee can expect to grow larger than Burma (who is an Indian elephant).
There’s been several unsuccessful attempts to undertake AI on Anjalee, which has contributed to Auckland Zoo’s decision to phase out elephants and send her to Taronga Western Plains Zoo. This will give her the chance to breed naturally with one of their bulls.
