@Grant By at least one metric (length), King Cobras *are* the largest venomous snakes in the world. Is your issue with the word "poisonous" instead of "venomous", or is there some other detail I'm missing?
@TinoPup Myself and many others in the zoo field feel that it kind of sends a false message as a large majority of the public confuse the two terms or use them incorrectly when it comes to snakes. As in technically venom is injected and poison is inhaled or ingested therefore it's helpful to clarify for people. I was surprised that they had that on a sign is all, nothing against your photo whatsoever, as the 4 AZA zoos I have worked in would never have that on a sign. And the Bronx has had many instances of slow updated or incomplete signage which explains my comment. Great photo it's nothing against your actual picture. Thank you.
Here's an excerpt from Britannica explaining my comment.. "According to biologists, the term venomous is applied to organisms that bite (or sting) to inject their toxins, whereas the term poisonous applies to organisms that unload toxins when you eat them. This means that very few snakes are truly poisonous."
@Grant I know there's a difference, venom is a specific form of poison. With kids I generally phrase it as "venom goes after you, but you go after (ex eat) poison". I used to get annoyed by signs, and people, that mix them up, but I eventually decided it isn't worth it. There's so many other things to be annoyed by, starting with people who want all snakes killed. I'd rather focus on conceptions that are entirely incorrect, vs ones that are more technical.
I completely agree with the zoo's signage! I've ranted about it on here before, and even argued with Breheny about it on twitter (he, of course, thought all of their signage was excellent and up to date).
