The fences in the Mangrove have a surprisingly fun history behind them:
Burger's zoo protects a large area of mangrove forest in Belize. So for their next project they wanted to bring some of that to their actual zoo.
As a bit of extra decoration, the designer (Stef) wanted to make a few hammocks outside, made out of fishing nets.
They asked local fishermen in Belize if they could remove fishing nets out of the Mangroves, then Burgers' would buy them. A win-win-win, since the Mangroves would get a clean-up, Burgers' would get extra decoration, and the fishermen would get some extra cash!
The fishermen came back with so many nets, however. That they were used to make almost all the fences in the mangrove dome! (You can find them along the manatee bridge, the small building you see here, and the rest of the crab enclosure)
I think it's absolutely amazing. Not only the (pretty hilarious) story, but also the fact that these are genuine fishing nets that came out of the real Belizean mangroves
@Mr Gharial Very interesting story. I can't remember it being told at the park. But it does show that a lot might go into what seems like relatively mundane details of building a zoo.
@Mr Gharial It would be a good story to put on a sign or to include in a sign about the Belize project. That's what I meant by being told at the park, maybe I should have stated that more clearly.
