@Gigit WOW!! Blank canvas or what? I wonder if this area will become a bigger version of the keepers ‘secret fern garden’ adjacent to the male Cassowary?
@TriUK Perhaps this would be a good site for the memorial to African elephant, Duchess, that people like me contributed to after her death. The zoo announced that they were commissioning an interactive touchable artwork. She died on 14 July 2019. It must be finished now?
@Gigit There were whispers that they were going to purchase the Lego elephant that was on show last year? I agree that there should be one, but it should be bronze. I actually think there should be a Herbert Whitley memorial garden with a statue (similar to the one of Gerald at Durrell)?
@TriUK I hadn't heard about the Lego elephant. I do hope not - how trite and impersonal. I'd much rather my donation went to something that makes a statement. The February 2021 thread in the General Zoo Discussions forum called 'Most Beautiful Sculptures In Zoos' has many examples of eye-catching art work. Elephant pieces in particular include one from Copenhagen on page 5 that looks as though it came from IKEA; a mosaic elephant at Six Flags USA on page 10; and a carved one at Disney on page 12. (Sorry, I have no idea how to transfer the photos to here ) The zoo must be awash with timber at the moment and there are several carved benches on page 11 - a seat is quite interactive! These examples will not be to everyone's taste but are surely a step up from Lego?
