@Neil chace Roan are only kept by 10 or so zoos, and thompson's is becoming less and less common. Same with impala! There's several lesser kudu near me so I forget they're more rare than greater, at about 20 zoos to 50.
@TinoPup I've seen Roan at Buffalo before- but the rest of those ungulates I've ever never seen or haven't seen since before I started my lifelist/keeping track. Definitely was nice to see some interesting ungulates, a group of animals I wish more Zoos would focus on!
@TinoPup yeah, since I started my lifelist I haven't been able to go to many ungulate heavy zoos, unfortunately. There's not much in terms of ungulates at zoos near me in New England. I know I've seen eland years ago, though, and I am pretty sure I've seen addax years ago as well. But not since I started keeping track three years ago.
Within New England, Lupa is ungulate heavy - eland, collared peccary, grants zebra, reeve's muntjac, elk, blackbuck, scimitar, fallow deer, nilgai, bison, tapir.
Southwick has elk, tapir, indian rhino, vicuna (only place in the US), RRH, warthog, aoudad, zebra, reeve's muntjac, fallow, sika, and scimitar.
For ungulates I'd also highly recommend making the trip to six flags great adventure for the safari! They have tons of species, including some big rarities like black wildebeest (5 holders in the US), beisa (10 or so), and red lechwe.
@TinoPup I was at Southwicks in August, and Lupa is on my list for hopeful visits this spring (it's about a two hour drive). I'll have to look into those New York places. Wild Animal Park is on my list (especially since I'll end up driving by it at least a few times a year starting soon- the college I'm going to next year is in Buffalo). and I'm not familiar with the other two. Just so you know with Southwicks, they have White Rhino not Indian.
@Neil chace I went to Wild Animal Park in the fall and really liked it, plenty of carnivores and ungulates. I was pleasantly surprised by my visit, they seem to be putting in a good effort to make exhibits that are attractive and suitable for the species in them, vs a bunch of standard rectangles like new places do. It's definitely on my re-visit list, even though it's nearly 6 hours away. The other two are smaller and have a short open schedule, but they're both drive through places. Thanks about the rhino, I had both species listed with question marks, USDA said Indian.
@TinoPup huh. I don't know why USDA lists them as Indians. Southwicks correctly identifies them as white rhinos both at the zoo and on their website, and I'm pretty certain the zoo is rather active in the ZAA's white rhino program.
