One of two outdoor exhibits for Orangutans. This one is the biggest one, in the second one the male orangutan live with two siamangs. Although, the indoor exhibits aren't this big, :(.
But the orangs in berlin are not fat, not lazy, and they climb up in the trees also, also i've seen clouded leopards moving on the ground, so at howeltts or Phoenix, altough they had many climbing opportunities in their exhibits.
The oarngs at Leipzig or Frankfurt, bth zoos have brand exhbits, Frankfurt up to 12 meters high, with a lot of trees in it, and the orangs are playing also on the ground, they are not fat, tehy are not lazy, they are showing no disturbed behaviour, so whats wrong with that, if the animals want to be on the ground ?
I agree with you if the animals have no trees or other climbing opportuniteis in their enclosures and tehy have no othet choice than sitting on the ground, to judge this, but if they have enough treees in it, its absolutly okay, if they playing or doing other things on the ground also ! So elephants seals spend most of their livers in the ocean, but in zoos they like it to be on land also to enjoy a sun bath or something else.
@Zebraduiker: speaking of exhibits with tons of climbing opportunities, you should check out the Budongo chimpanzee exhibit at Edinburgh Zoo. There is a photo here at ZooChat that shows the outdoor habitat stuffed with climbing poles and vines...and that would be something that would make orangs happy!
