@Chlidonias She is a purebred gaur, but as @SivatheriumGuy said, she is elderly— 21, to be exact. A quick Google search shows wild cows with longer hair in similar areas, but it likely looks/is longer on this individual due to her reduced body condition/age— we’ve had several geriatric eland at my facility get quite hairy in their later years to compensate for their reduced fat stores.

Jokes aside, unfortunately, the gaur population in Europe is quite small as well and I believe they are to be phased out eventually as well.
It's unfortunate the AZA has made this decision but there's nothing they can do when facilities aren't interested in housing the species. At least, Bronx is still committed to housing and breeding them so perhaps several years in the future, more facilities will acquire gaur from Bronx.
@IndianRhino I see, sad news, but there are probably multiple zoos in India with gaur. Also, autocorrect has tried to make the word gaur into gait and hair, not sure why though.
@Bengal Tiger Yes, the captive gaur population in India is thriving! I got to see some at the Vandalur Zoo a few years back, don't remember too much other than being very impressed.

Sad to see the Gaur are going the same way in the US as they are in Europe. At least they’ll persist at Bronx - if you’re lucky you’ll see them for 7 seconds!
Isnthjs individual still in San Diego? The population seems healthier in Europe so even with the winding down I imagine they’ll stick around for a good while yet. And I can’t imagine Berlin will be itching to bin them off anytime soon.
Glad to hear they’re doing so well in captivity in India. Sadly the chances of exports from there are extremely low, as with anything.
