Siberian Musk-Deer. August 14, 2021. Not an easy species to photograph at the zoo due to the fencing, the location of the pathway over the enclosure, and the fact that the habitat is unsigned both on the map and in-person. This species is almost gone from the US at this point, only held at San Diego, Akron, and Dakota Zoo to my knowledge.
It's too bad this animal isn't properly on-display, as not only is this a beautiful endangered species, but also it has a very impressive set of canines.
@UngulateNerd92 Bronx shipped theirs out a few years ago to Akron. Columbus' I think died off within the past year, maybe within the last few months even.
@ThylacineAlive thank you. I know that Los Angeles Zoo and possibly even Denver Zoo was interested in acquiring them, but the plans never came to fruition.
In that article where I learned of Los Angeles Zoo's interest in acquiring Siberian musk deer, it also brought up their interest in acquiring Bactrian deer and Visayan spotted deer. This was all when Jeff Holland was their Curator of Mammals.
