If I remember, the Rhino house was like this too. In those days they had pairs of Black, White and Indian, and moated yards outside. I think its all radically changed since those days- again, is it just the outsides though?
I can't make an up-to-date comment as I have not been there myself since 2004; but then the old Rhinoceros house was still there, with Black and Indian; White and Indian are over in Tierpark Berlin, so the three species are still present in the city of Berlin, albeit between two zoos.
I haven't heard of changes to the Elephant House, although I think that in the 1960s, when you visited, they had African Elephants too, it would have been crowded. Of course, since 1997 the two Hippopotamus species have had the splendid Hippopotamus Dome, but I was lucky enough to get to see the old Hippopotamus house back in 1995.
As far as I know the Rhino House currently houses 0.1.1 black rhinos with one outdoor enclosure, 1.1 indian rhinos with two outdoor enclosures, 1.1 lowland tapirs with one outdoor enclosure and 1.0 baird's tapirs with one outdoor enclosure. A black rhino male is house elsewhere in the zoo.
The inside of the Elephant House remains the same. It is not great but not horrible either. The outdoor exhibit for the elephant herd was expanded in 2009.
