Scanned San Diego Zoo Photos 1992-2001

Pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus)

Unfortunately my only chance at photographing Pampas deer so far. Of course they were the only deer species behind fencing in the entire zoo!

San Diego Zoo got their Pampas deer from Berlin Zoo, around that time they also got Marsh deer from Berlin Zoo but the Marsh deer didnt live very long, besides San Diego Zoo, other US zoos that had Pampas deer were San Antonio Zoo and Bronx Zoo. By the way nice photo Giant Eland !!! I always enjoy your zoo photos !!!

Yes I believe they were just before where the Panda exhibit is now. I think Bongo were held in this area as well.

So the exact subspecies of San Diego Zoo's animals were the Chacoan pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus leucogaster). The San Diego Wild Animal Park had them too. Imagine if they were still around in the United States and a zoo did a mixed exhibit with Chacoan pampas deer, Chacoan peccary, and maybe even Chacoan mara.
