Elephant Viewing - ugh!

August 11, 2022
It's funny - with the initial concept for this exhibit, the whole vibe of it was meant to be open and "airy", if that makes sense. The overall exhibit is meant to resemble a dried riverbed, with the hill covering the house effectively being a natural and subtle transition, landscape-architecturewise. And then the realities of elephant husbandry kick in, resulting in these ostentatious monstrosities. Even a post-and-cable fence a la Oregon would have been more subtle, and actually would have fit the concept a lot better.

@StoppableSan Well said! The elephants in Copenhagen, especially the males in this part of the enclosure, have enormous walls on almost all sides thanks to the rust-coloured poles. It's dreadful for visitors as well, as even seeing an elephant is difficult.
