They arrived in late summer 2008 from San Diego. They are in the right (larger) of the two asian bear habitats; the sun bear now stays in the left one. Unfortunately, they have completely dug up their exhibit since this photo was taken. It is now nothing but dirt. Still, it is fun to finally see a species of wild pig at Reid Park.
Yes, there are three females. We could possibly get a male for breeding down the line, but nothing definite yet. The exhibit has a pool in the front and they do walk into the water a little - not submerged, but not afraid to get their feet wet.
I know that they were unfortunately phased out of Reid Park Zoo's collection. When were they sent out and where were they sent to? or did they die off through attrition?
@UngulateNerd92 They were sent somewhere, but I am not sure where. Phoenix and San Diego no longer have them either so I wonder if the USA population has now died out?
@Arizona Docent hmm I doubt that the American population has died out, but how and when did you find out about San Diego Zoo and Phoenix Zoo no longer keeping them? San Diego Zoo had them in Monkey Trails and Phoenix Zoo had them on the Children's Trail during my last visits. I'll check their most recent studbook and see what I find.
@UngulateNerd92 I think I am mis-remembering Phoenix Zoo, so you may be right that they do have them in children's zoo. (The exhibit is so horrendous compared to how lush it was when it held raccoons that perhaps I blocked it out of my memory to displace the trauma ). I haven't been to San Diego Zoo in four years or so, but I don't remember them the last time I was there. Again I may just be mis-remembering.
