Kagu

Rhynochetos jubatus

What are conditions like at berlin and Walsrrode for this species? do they have any special features for these rare brids or is it just another cage?

When we were at Walsrode the Kagus' enclosures were just aviaries like any other. The birds were clearly doing very well though - we saw around a dozen birds and they regularly breed.

The other European zoo where these can be seen is Wuppertal, where they are also housed in pretty standard bird accommodation. I haven't seen Berlin's yet - missed them by about a year.

The only major thing about berlins exhibit for them is that the indoor aviary is probably the most well planted exhibit ive seen for just one species

I saw kagu in Berlin several times during the 1980s; in those days the species was housed in the old Pheasantry.

There have been no kagu in Berlin on my last few visits; I haven’t been there since kagu returned to the collection.

Whereabouts in the zoo is the current kagu aviary? Are they back in the old Pheasantry?

I saw a pair of kagu at the menagerie of the jardin des plantes in paris on a sunny morning in March, 2008. They were outside in the pheasant section. My camera battery stopped and i went to the shade to change it. When i returned the kagu were back in the indoor shelter and did not venture out again.

The kagu are in the aviary at the end of Pheasantry at the side which isnt next to the bird house
