@UngulateNerd92 - When I visited last spring, the white-lipped deer were actually mixed in the field exhibit, as the park had moved the Bactrian deer to the North Africa habitat in preparation for a then planned phase-out. Based on recent photos, it appears that the park has gone back on the Bactrian deer phase-out and has moved them back to the Asian field exhibits, moving the white-lipped deer back to the hillside exhibit.
@Kudu21 ah thank you for letting me know. I am sorry to hear that they were planning to phase out Bactrian deer. Why did they decide to do that and then why did they backtrack on that decision?
@UngulateNerd92 - At that time they were looking to focus their efforts solely on the white-lipped deer, so the Bactrian deer were to go to provide more space for the white-lipped and avoid hybridization. The management, as many know, has since turned over, and it appears the new management has decided to reverse that decision. The difficulty in placing the Bactrian herd probably also had something to do with it.
