@steveroberts The Rainforest (including this spider monkey exhibit) opened in 1996. It’s an interesting trail as it incorporates many historical features. This moated exhibit was built on the site of the old elephant pool (and includes some of the original brickwork). It’s opposite the old elephant house, where the elephants used to be walked across every afternoon to use the pool. You enter the Rainforest by walking through the zoo’s old giraffe house - which now houses tarantulas.
Oh right, its extremely impressive, Auckland Zoo have done top tier works in both rainforest and savannah works over the last 25 years (am co-complimenting the Orangutan and Siamang arboreal paradise in unison with the tropical theme). Really impressive and is apparent from great photos alone having not been able to visit in person.
@steveroberts It’s a credit to Auckland Zoo that they have so many older exhibits that have aged remarkably well - the rainforest exhibits (1996), the baboon exhibit (1999) and the seal pool (2001) all being examples of older exhibits that still look fantastic today.
The South East Asian precinct (2022) is the zoo’s newest precinct; followed by the Australian precinct (2016) and the New Zealand precinct (2011).
