I'm pretty sure the original pair (the older female that is still there (Lanka) and the now-deceased male Ceylon) actually came direct from Sri Lanka, in fact.

The original pair came from Poland (Warsaw Zoo); I don't know anything of their previous history.

Interesting. Do we know if all those 'no subspecies' animals are genuinely unknown subspecies, and not just not properly listed? ISIS records can sometimes gloss over these things, so I'm always cautious!

If they are generics that's surprising; I'd always understood the US population was very Sri Lankan-dominated.

That's what I've always been led to believe as well! :confused:
I take it a lot of US institutions are breeding from the hybrids as they don't seem to have a viable population of pure bears?
