The zoo currently has two black-footed ferrets (along with however many they have at SCBI) and while they still do have prairie dogs they no longer keep any in the small mammal house.
I'm not really sure of the rarity of most of the species in the SMH, but I wouldn't say there's currently as many rarer species as there were in the past. Based on my personal travels I'd say the rarer species might be the brush-tailed bettong, black-footed ferret, pygmy slow loris and the screaming hairy armadillos maybe? But like I said I'm not really sure. The zoo finally added the pygmy slow loris to the website so the current species list on the website is completely accurate as of my visit yesterday.
They have Przewalski's horse listed as being in the Small Mammal House. I hope that is an error! I found out recently that gorillas and chimps were kept in the Small Mammal House until the 1970s, so not all of the inhabitants have always been small...
My guess is that the Small Mammal House staff are the ones in charge of the horses, which is why they're listed in that sections species list (like the maras and prairie dogs are listed under the "Great Cats" section & the Andean bears under "Amazonia"). I'm not really sure though.
