Stewart the Blue-eyed Black Lemur (1990-2022)

Rare Animal Conservation Center, August 18, 2015.
Stewart the blue-eyed black lemur, who just celebrated his 32nd birthday in March, passed away in late July, 2022. Upon his death he was the oldest of his species on record.

@Ding Lingwei wow, even when he was 25 he looked so healthy in this picture! He declined significantly in the last few years prior to his death and especially in the last year or two.

@Ding Lingwei around late 2018 was when he started to decline and that has gotten significantly worse in the last one or two years. He had kidney disease for four years, a liver tumor for over a year and severe arthritis that kept getting worse and worse. In fact in the last year or two, he got considerably skinny, lost a lot of hair, and could barely walk well at all. His arthritis got so bad that keepers added a ton of ramps, ropes and ladders to help him navigate his habitat because he was falling from the branches. Bedding was added early this year so if he fell he wouldn’t get hurt. He was on numerous amounts of numerous different kinds of medications. None of that was due to his death but the only thing was his liver tumor caused him to have trouble breathing and they euthanized him before he would begin to feel pain and stop eating.
