A sizeable chunk of the centre of the zoo is given over to deer paddocks, with a number of these small, attractive stable blocks. This is the Vietnamese Sika paddock.

very attractive, but nowadays I feel increasing uncomfortable about grazing species kept on sand- all they can munch on is hay in a rack. As you know, Fallow and other deer normally graze for much of their activity cycle and it just seems wrong seeing them denied that behaviour like this (like Rabbits in hutches).
Some deer e.g. Roe, are mainly browsers but larger species(apart from Moose/Elk) are more often predominately grazers, particularly species like Fallow which graze to a very large extent- almost like sheep. For example, in the New Forest they are drawn like magnets to the short grass areas(lawns)/open meadows where the best grass is- this is taken in preference to virtually any other food.
