Swine House Interior at Berlin Zoo, 31/08/11

A fascinating old building - two rows of pens, small but not very much smaller than Chester's indoor pig holdings, or example. The building has a large glass skylight now that I don't recall from previous visits that has brightened up the interior massively. The house currently houses Red River Hogs, Babirusa and White-lipped Peccaries (the zoo has two other wild pig species (Bornean Bearded Pigs and Warthogs) elsewhere.

Do you know if this house is open to the public during winter? It wasn't when I visited yesterday so I still haven't seen a babirusa :(

That's a shame - you're bit cursed on the the babirusa front!

I'm not sure if it stays open all winter - all my visits have been late summer/autumn and it's always been open as far as I recall.

I used to think it was okapis. I'd only had single sightings at Chester, Bristol, and Antwerp until I visited Rotterdam. I went past their exhibits three times and didn't see a single one. Anyway, as I was leaving I couldn't find the way to get back to the entrance/exit and walked into a building I hadn't seen until then and wasn't marked on the map. Turns out it was the Okapi House and there were 5 inside. I was in heaven.

I'm definitely unlucky with babirusa as well though. They've evaded me at Chester, Antwerp, and now Berlin.

And, Animal, it'd be just my luck if a babirusa was having babies while I was at the zoo.

That sounds like Rotterdam Zoo to me! :D

It has its odd shortcomings (like anywhere) but there are very few zoos of Rotterdam's overall quality in Europe. Back there myself later in the year and can't wait. Hope you enjoyed it!

That's very bad luck. Have got any more chances?

They are usually easy to see at Dudley but as they are now both very old I dont know for how much longer......

Thanks for the heads up but I'm only going to be in the UK for about 48 hours before I head home. Hopefully they're still around in a couple of years. :)

you should definitely see them in Singapore PAT. And as I always say to people going to Singapore Zoo -- keep an eye out for colugos in the trees!!
