The Indian rhino in question was the female ‘Mohini’ who was at Whipsnade for more than twenty years, then spent a while in London before going to Amsterdam.
Came across this old pic of a black rhino at the zoo, to me it looks as though it was taken at the elephant house, but never have i seen such a lethal looking ditch!
It was. "Mohini" was kept for many years with her son, "Manik", after her original mate and the latter's father, "Mohan" died in 1961.
"Roopa" was obtained as a mate for "Manik" in 1975 (?). The latter almost immediately died, and was replaced by "Kumar" from Berlin. "Kumar" and "Roopa" were "Yodha"'s parents
And I know you knew all this, Tim, but I thought the thread should be tied up by pointing out that "Yodha" now lives in Berlin!

It's hard to guage the gap between the rhinos' platform and guard rail, but it LOOKS as though it's just the right size for a rhino to get bits of its anatomy badly 'stuck' if it slipped off the platform. At least the horrible ditch in the book review is wide enough to accommodate a whole rhino, even if it died falling in.....
