@Haliaeetus It is one of the many splits that were proposed in the book Ungulate Taxonomy by Groves & Grubb based on next to no evidence. But surprisingly this and many other splits were thoughtlessly copied into the Handbook of the Mammals of the World and the Illustrated Checklist.
