Looks as I remember in the 1960's. At that time there was a big group of bears- the most I'd seen in one enclosure. It also looked hugely spacious to me- compared to UK Polar Bear enclosures, but it probably wouldn't if I went back now...;)

It actually still stacks up fairly well, I'd say - though it'd be nice if it had some more soft substrate.

Well, there's only HWP that display polar bears in the UK now, so I suppose Berlin's would look smaller!!:)

Seriously, would it look better if some of that water area was given over to gravel used for scatter feeds ?

It still holds up nicely compared to many other older bear grottoes though. But less water, more soft substrate would be even better.

Isn't it odd that as the Polar bear spends most of it's life on "land" either waiting for the ice to form then living and hunting on the frozen sea we see so much water in almost every polar bear exhibit you see.

Yet conversely hardly any areas of water for American brown bears who are known to hunt salmon. Just a thought.

There are actually alot of exhibits that have lots of water for Brown Bears (Woodland park ,Brookfield, Minnesota, Columbus, Hogle, Louisville) and some of those have live fish.

I haven't been to those zoos Tropicworld54 I was thinking more about Amsterdam zoo and the old London zoo which spring most readily to mind, also though i haven't been in person, from TV programms I don't think Woburn safari park has water with their all be it black bears
