Unfortunately, I didn't get a good quality photo of the orangutans using the aerial pathways (they move so quickly, and my iPhone 6 doesn't keep up so fast anymore!).
I believe this is 0.1 Dewi (2010), but might be her mother, Maimunah.
@Hix Not the primate boulevard, it crosses the path which looks into the orangutans on one side and the elephant exhibit on the other. The tower on the right in this photo is positioned close to the boundary fence for the elephant exhibit, and the ropes (out of shot, but on the left from this photo) join back up to the climbing structures within the outdoor exhibit itself.
I'll have to visit again to see this.
First time I walked into the zoo and looked at the Primate Boulevard I thought it would be a great place to have a rope walkway for Orangs, from one side to the other. But the orangs are elswhere.
@Hix It was a very impressive sight. The infrastructure was in place when I first visited the zoo a year ago in April 2022, but according to a keeper I spoke to yesterday, the orangutans have only recently taken to using the aerial pathways, and have been given access to them for about the last 6 months.
@Abbey That’s interesting. Auckland’s trio were like rats up a drainpipe when first given access to the aerial ropes. The youngest female, Melur, was the most keen and Charlie follows wherever she goes.
