Giraffes at the historic Antelope and Giraffe House.
Is this the original 1872 Antelope House? Is it designed as a mosque? The Antelope House was rebuilt after WWII but how much of it was destroyed by the war? One of the hallmarks of German efficiency is that several of the major zoos of the nation were decimated by bombings and yet many of the facilities emerged as amongst the best of their kind during the decades after the war ended.

It is not a mosque, but just a building, built in Moors style. The inspiration for this building came from the Egyptian temple in Antwerp.

This is the same building as was built in 1871, although it has been destroyed to a large extent, it has been renovated in the old style after the war. But of course the number of outdoor enclosures has changed much since then, from 21 down to +-5...

It might have been German efficiency, but a lot of the capital in West Berlin came from the US, UK, and France. The three Western powers gave a lot of money towards the reconstruction of West Berlin, which was officially not part of the pre-1991 Federal Republic.

It would be interesting to know how much UK government money went towards the reconstruction of West Berlin Zoo, compared to how much was given to London.
