The species is Near Threatened, but it is not uncommon in zoos as ZTL lists it in 33 collections in Europe. It has been bred in aquaria, and as Chester put a group of several small specimens on show, it is possible that they were captive bred: they have grown significantly since this photo was taken, but I expect it will be several years before they reach adult size. I think that their unusual appearance and behaviour make them an interesting exhibit.
