Squirrel Monkey Exhibit (walk-through)

July 12, 2023
@Coelacanth18 Nope. There are 19 monkeys in the exhibit and it was a blazing hot day and so they all hung around in the treetops. It wasn't like Apenheul, which had 96 Squirrel Monkeys when I was there in 2019 and some of them followed me around.

It really depends on the day, in my experience, though in general the zoo does not allow interaction with the monkeys so the animals aren't used to being close to people.

@Ituri Thanks for the context. I asked because I had a similar experience to @snowleopard; I saw the squirrel monkeys, but none of them came close to the visitors while I was in there. It was a much more subdued experience than what I've heard about from squirrel monkey walkthroughs abroad!

Nothing really prepares a North American zoo nerd for primate adventures in Europe. I have visited zoos across the Atlantic where there's no one else around (Givskud in Sweden or Rheine in Germany) and yet I've been in with big male Barbary Macaques looking ominous by the side of the pathway. Apenheul (Netherlands) has opportunities to be in free range of Barbary Macaques, Red Howler Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys, Hanuman Langurs and at least a dozen other species. It's a shock at first, but also enrichment for the monkeys! :)
