Coelacanth18 7 Aug 2023 @Prochilodus246 Yeah I was thinking either Royal or Elegant, but not sure which.
S S Summer Tanager 8 Aug 2023 That is a tough call to make, but I would agree with Royal Tern. The bill looks pretty stout (thick top to bottom) rather than thin and long like an Elegant Tern. The top of the head also looks more like a non-breeding adult Royal Tern.

Coelacanth18 8 Aug 2023 Thanks. I will label it as "Royal Tern?" for now. I'll also see if @Great Argus concurs, I know they're familiar with California larids.

Great Argus 8 Aug 2023 I'd agree with Royal - bill appears to be fairly stout and seems decently sized. You don't perchance happen to have any photos showing the full bill?

Coelacanth18 8 Aug 2023 @Great Argus Unfortunately no. I have a second photo that is almost identical - at best it shows maybe 10% more of the bill.
