@SwampDonkey Interesting, didn't know the species was that rare. Franklin Park Zoo had signs for them when I visited so they might be the other AZA holder but this last year and I actually didn't end up seeing them, so its possible they're gone from there already.
@SusScrofa I am not sure how rare it is specifically, in this case she was saying the combination of African penguins and the ducks was rare. But I really don't know how common they are at all in the AZA
The only holder I had for Hartlaub's is Sylvan Heights - so if anyone does happen to know who the second AZA with this mix is I'd be curious to know as well.
Edit - looked around a bit and seems San Diego, Philly, Pinola, and maybe Livingston Ripley have them, but neither of the former two mix them with penguins it seems.
I believe that you are all correct. From the list that I have, Hartlaub's Ducks have been in at least five U.S. collections since 2021 - San Diego Zoo, Livingston Ripley in Litchfield, CT, Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, Sylvan Heights in NC, and Franklin Park in Boston. Other zoos have mixed this species with other ducks, but not with penguins as far as I know. This is a very cool duck and it's a shame that it's not more popular in the U.S. - especially with so many zoos having Africa-themed exhibits. The Oklahoma City Zoo had Hartlaub's Ducks in the late 1990s/early 2000s, but it's been at least 18 years since I last saw them.
