Southern Ground Hornbill Island

July 9, 2023
It really is a waste to have just Southern ground hornbill on the island... honestly I'd bring back colobus or even put in red-tailed guenons as well!

@StoppableSan I totally agree. A real shame!

Here is what it looked like on my last visit in July 2017. All of the climbing structures and even some of the lush vegetation is now all gone.

I just had a brain blast for what kind of animal could do this exhibit justice - sitatunga! A large body of water as well as a scenic set of islands, and San Diego (theoretically) has no shortage of hoofstock holding areas. Maybe some pelicans as well?

I don't think there's sufficient containment or infrastructure to support Sitatunga here - would need quite a bit of revamp work. The island itself is not tremendously large either.
