Zoo Map - undated

The date looks to be 2002-2004 given that there's no river dolphin listed in the aquarium (died early 2002), and the Niches of the World building is shown (demolished in early 2005 to build Water's Edge).

@Gondwana Thanks for the information. Do you happen to remember what was inside the Niches of the World building? It had such an interesting name! My only visit to Pittsburgh Zoo was in 2008.

@snowleopard Good question. I visited Pittsburgh for the first time in 2004 and the building was still open. It was set up as a dark curved tunnel with glass-fronted exhibits. The building was built into a hillside so you got the sense of going underground. The collection was an eclectic mix of herps and midsized mammals, mostly herps. A quite similar exhibit that's still around is the "Natural Treasures" building at John Ball Zoo. I guess zoos struggle to find apt names for their "random animals in glass boxes" buildings when they're not clearly reptile, small mammal, or nocturnal houses.

My memory is a bit fuzzy on the exact species composition, but the highlight mammals were Black-footed Cat and Matschie's Tree Kangaroo, and the highlight herps were Komodo Dragon, Anaconda, and (I think) King Cobra, with a bunch of smaller herps mostly consisting of commonly displayed species like Gila Monster, Colorado River Toad, and Rattlesnakes. After the building closed, most of the mammals left the zoo, but the Komodo Dragons got a new purpose-built exhibit near the tigers and many of the other herps wound up in hastily built exhibits inside the Worlds of Discovery building. The new Anaconda exhibit in particular was a bit ridiculous, the main feature being a plastic preformed pond of the type you'd buy at Home Depot.
