A beautiful favorite of mine. I love monitor lizards, and this species is one of the exemplars of that group. One is kept in Congo Gorilla Forest in a large terrarium, with a species of turtle.
@Ebirah766: First, thanks for sharing your pictures. However, afaik, this is not a (common) nile monitor but an ornate monitor (Varanus ornatus). The majority of the scientists are agree that they are (no longer) the same species (a subspecies) but a species of its own instead.
Obviously there was another taxonomy research after the one I was aware of (Thanks @Ituri). However, after reading the link, my understanding is that there must have more research done to clarify the taxonomic situation. (Also I would bet that the sign at the exhibit at Bronx said Varanus ornatus on my last visit a couple of years ago).
