Morris the only Pacific gannet

  • Media owner splendens
  • Date added
9/3/2023 Pillar Point Harbor, San Mateo County California
Morris who is named after the Northern Gannet's genus name, is the only known gannet in the Pacific ocean. He is theorized to have crossed over when the sea ice in Alaska melted enough to create a passage.
Morris has been seen around California for over ten years by now. The breakwater of Pillar Point Harbor is a favorite spot along with the Farallon Islands, though he is found throughout the area from Pt. Reyes all the way down to Monterey. He is sometimes seen attempting to court the brandts cormorants to no success. Must be lonely being the only one of your species in the largest ocean.

"... the only known gannet in the Pacific ocean" - that is not true at all. There are tens of thousands of gannets just around New Zealand alone.

@Chlidonias They're technically correct when they say species although, as this is the only known? Northern Gannet in the Pacific Ocean (although there could always be more undocumented ones)

@Chlidonias Yeah I meant Morus bassanus, I probably should have worded that better. Also I kind of forgot that the Australasian gannet exists :p
