Zoo Map - 1972

I think I've got a guide from the 40's with a map, I'll get a photo of that uploaded and/or sent to you.

Thanks for sharing this! I don't think I've seen this map before, or a map from this era (especially not one so colourful!). Of course, some of the species stand out (ocelots! Pere David's deer!), albeit in much smaller enclosures than they would have today. This is also pre-Chimpanzee Park. I didn't realise there had originally been two nocturnal houses.

The map is fascinating in that there's a series of very large animal icons (Sailfish, American Bison, Mandrill, Giant Anteater, etc.), but those animal images are all on the outskirts. The actual map itself has only the names of creatures.

@snowleopard Yes the images seem more decorative, rather than practical. Like many hand-illustrated Taronga maps, it also indicates service buildings and the like, which was the case into the 2000s. A friend of mine who has worked at Taronga more recently was surprised by that when seeing older maps, as it's not the case anymore.
