A view across the outdoor enclosures of the Elefantenpark in Cologne Zoo, Germany. The outdoor area consists of three spacious outdoor enclosures; two for the females and one for the male. Soft sand covers the ground in all of the enclosures and there are several very deep water moats in which the elephants can swim. Once the trees growing on the fake rockwork gains some volume it will look really good.
The Elefantenpark opened in September 2004 and is the biggest project in Cologne Zoos history. The total size of the Elepfantenpark is 2 hectares or 4.95 acres, equal to 10% of the zoos total size. Between 15 and 20 Asian elephants live the in Elefantenpark and it is one of the best and most spacious elephant exhibits in Europe.
