Cologne Zoo - Bonobo exhibit

A view into the outdoor exhibit for bonobos by the Urwaldhaus, the great ape house in Cologne Zoo, Germany. The exhibit consists of three linked netted exhibits, all spacious and with dense vegetation. There are several robes hanging down for climbing and the bonobos can completely disappear into the shrubberies if they wish. My only suggestion for improvement would be to add some more big branches and climbing trees but it is still a very good exhibit.

The Urwaldhaus in Cologne Zoo opened in 1985 and as of 2009 houses three species of great apes and three species of old-world monkeys.

This is an impressive great ape complex, especially considering the fact that it was built in 1985, and it still maintains a high degree of excellence in 2009. All of the outdoor photos of the bonobo netted enclosures show a lush, green environment, but were all of the apes hiding or inside on the day that you visited? The orangutan and gorilla exhibits also appear to be above average, and the Cologne Zoo has done a great job designing habitats for its great apes.

To be honest I am not sure of the bonobo exhibit was built in 1985 or is a later extension to the Urwaldhaus. The orangutan and gorilla exhibits are from that time though.

Yes, it was a semi-rainy day so all the apes had been given their treats inside. One or two of the orangutans and the guerezas did venture out later in the day when it had cleared up but the bonobos and gorillas stayed inside.

The bonobo outdoor exhibit was built in 1995, it is pretty lush and intensely used by the apes. The outdoor exhibits for Gorillas and Orang-Utan are showing too less vegetation and too less places to hide, the orang-utans do not enter it.
