I see a Red-crested Turaco in the first aviary! I've really liked the Birmingham Zoo over the past 20 years. They've made a lot of updates and they have great collections of birds and small mammals. Thank you for posting these pictures.

@Summer Tanager Thanks! Yeah, they had a surprisingly rich collection of birds here, definitely a surprise! However, I do personally feel that many exhibits of the zoo are badly aged and need a facelift (orangutan exhibit especially). Personally I thought Montgomery while having its own weaknesses, was the better of the two. But that's certainly worth a debate :)

@SusScrofa I've never been to the Montgomery Zoo, but I have no doubt that it has some great exhibits. My impression of Montgomery's Zoo (based on its bird collection) is that it's a smaller zoo. I admit that some of the Birmingham exhibits are outdated, but at least they retain a lot of their bird diversity - and the exhibits are much better than they were in the 80s!

As an Alabama native, I’ve been to both zoos quite a bit, and even though the Montgomery Zoo is smaller, I like it better because the exhibits are of a better quality. The Birmingham Zoo, despite having a larger collection, was pretty run-down the last time I visited, (probably not helped by an unpleasant memory of falling on the uneven side-walk)
