Cologne Zoo - Moorish House (rhino)

The last black rhino inside the Moorish House in Cologne Zoo, Germany. This exhibit is not horrible but still inadequate for black rhinoceros. The rhino has three more stalls available. The Moorish House opened in 1863 and is, as far as I have understood, the oldest still functioning animal house in Germany.

The Moorish House has always functioned as a pachyderm house but the Asian elephants moved to the new Elefantenpark in 2002, the hippos will move to the new Hippodom in 2010 and the last black rhino will also leave soon. After that the Moorish House will be used as a zoo-museum.

Well well, that is a vague plan. I dont belive it till i see them building it.

The zoo will keep the black rhinos, the zoo will rebuild the indoor and outdoor facilities for them, but its not sure at this time, if they will keep this male, or if they will get a complete new pair, that's the decision of the EEP coordinator.

It is said on a sign on the enclosure that the male Tacco leaves the zoo in 2010.

Then the zoo will got new black rhinos. As fa as I know, this bull never bred successful , so it makes sense to give the zoo a new pair. After the elephants left the building, there was indeed a discussion stop keeping rhinos at the cologne zoo, but just for a short time.

The outdoor area is unusual for its extensive use of glass panels which permit close viewing of the rhino.
