This photo only shows about 60% of the exhibit, which also features fantastic underwater viewing angles. The enclosure has been closed for a long time now as construction crews spend $8 million upgrading it to possibly become one of North America's top polar bear complexes. I think that it is still a couple of years away from being fully complete, but in the long run the zoo wants to eventually breed the species. On a side note, if this is regarded as one of the "lesser exhibits" at a zoo then you know that it is a world-class facility. I'd personally have North Carolina Zoo as without a doubt one of North America's 10 best, and hopefully an Asian section can one day be added to the enormous two zones that are currently in existence.
How is it looking after the renovation? It amazes me this enclosure uses so much fake rock, instead of just fencing off some land the zoo sits on and let the bears run wild. I know what the animals would prefer!
@Cat-Man The extension is much more like a slice of fenced-off land, modeled after an Alaskan meadow. The zoo has the original exhibit (for underwater viewing) alongside this extension with glass viewing and even a chilled "ice cave" for the bears to use!
