Cologne Zoo - Gorilla exhibit

Part of the outdoor gorilla exhibit by the Urwaldhaus, the great ape house in Cologne Zoo, Germany. The western lowland gorillas in here share their outdoor exhibit with kikuyu guerezas. The exhibit is not huge but well planted and perfectly adequate for a small group of gorillas. The guereza monkeys have access to the trees in the middle which provides a canopy cover for the gorillas. If the exhibit was to be covered with a net and have more climbing opportunities added for the gorillas it would be great.

The Urwaldhaus in Cologne Zoo opened in 1985 and as of 2009 houses three species of great apes and three species of old-world monkeys.

It is excellent and shows what can be done regarding dense vegetation, which once it gets a good hold the Gorillas won't destroy as there's too much of it.

I'm surprised the Colobus have not eaten all the leaves on the tree though..

I think covering the centre area with a net would be a good idea too if it meant more climbing apparatus could be added. The open middle area doesn't really achieve much in my opinion.

Cologne is keeping 1,3 Kikuyu black-and-white colobus monkey, the last offspring was born in 2009.

And the series of trapezes around the perimeter mean they can add a troop from Cirque du Soleil for more of a mixed species experience!

I suspect the older Gorillas don't use the trapezes very much (too unstable). But overall the planting/thick bamboo etc is very good and the angle of slope means good public viewing too. In many ways this is one of the very best outdoor Gorilla exhibits- being both Gorilla and Visitor friendly.
