I expected a lot more from this, but it still looks reasonably sized and they have a fair amount of grazing space too. Whilst it doesn't rival Werribee's aesthetic wise, I think it certainly does space wise.
@Jambo I just hope they focus on increasing the numbers of their bloat. Big exhibits are all well and good, but with just two hippos, better viewing opportunities can be had at zoos like Werribee, where you can see them up close.
@Jambo Very much so. Like Hamilton Zoo’s red panda exhibit, by sub-dividing it into smaller exhibits, they could accomodate a colony in the double figures. Once the Hippopotamus IRA is approved, they’ll do doubt import a bull; but an additional cow line would have been nice.
@Jambo Easily. It’ll be interesting to see how they manage breeding as it appears there’s no capacity to seperate the bull bar the use of off-display holding yards. Presumably the mother and calf would rotate display with the bull/other cow until the calf is of an age integration can be achieved.
@Jambo With the larger exhibit size, I’m hopeful it will assist with integration. It stands to reason that a smaller exhibit would see the hippos run into more frequent conflict with each other, which in turn increases risk of injury to the calves.
