Presumably Upupa epops saturata.
I have never seen this bird before, according to wikipedia it is rarely found in the UK. It was not at all shy and let me approach to within a couple of metres whilst it dug for insects next to the path. The black and white patterns on the tail and wings are quite extraordinary, as is the crest when erect.
