This 'Pachyderm House' is spectacular and thanks for your recent load of photos from Blijdorp Zoo. I loved my visit there in 2019 and these images are bringing back pleasant memories. It's still a great zoo.
I've only uploaded the Asian area of the zoo so far, and I have a lot more photos to come...
I agree that Taman Indah is quite nice, but it also shows a bit of the downside of Blijdorp: Not planning ahead.
Taman Indah is a wonderful collection of different Asian animals, with Rhinos, Tapirs, Elephants, Hornbills, Snakes and Fish it showcases almost all animal types. But most of the indoor habitats are too small in my opinion, especially the Rhinoceros one shown here. The decorations are also quite rough, with the trees and rocks not being pretty or realistic at all.
In general, I fear for Taman Indah, and for all of Blijdorp, to be honest.
If they just planned well ahead with these animal enclosures and made them big/stable enough in the first place we wouldn't be where we are now, with a lot of Blijdorp needing renovations and multiple enclosures soon to be removed because other animals don't have enough space (the giant aviary and Asian swamp) or being forced to close due to not making the enclosures last (the Amazonica greenhouse and the Ibis/Macaw aviaries).
I think Blijdorp is a really good and well-rounded zoo in terms or beautiful mini-areas and a great animal collection. But almost every mini-area makes me think; "wow, this would've been really great if they made it just a little bigger/made it a little more detailed/made sure to make it last"...
I remember that Blijdorp Zoo underwent a dramatic expansion and built a whole bunch of new exhibits around 20 years ago, but it seems as if so many of the enclosures were tight on space. Therefore, it's unfortunate that we are hitting that point in time when a lot of the 'new' stuff at the zoo hasn't aged very well. The future, with a depleted herp collection and no more gorillas, is not exciting.
Blijdorp has a big new masterplan. One that I'm a little hesitant about, because Blijdorp has produced masterplans before that didn't bear fruit...
It basically shows a full redo of the entire zoo. With the American region making way for a huge tropical African area, and the continental layout being replaced with more conservation-based regions (a dedicated area to local animals, a "last chance" region for critically endangered flora and fauna, etc). So hopefully that will allow for not only better, but also more long-lasting exhibits.
It's still Blijdorp, and they're still not the best at running their zoo in my opinion, but hopefully it makes for a better planned future. But it does mean that we'll see a low-quality Blijdorp for a while when those renovations are taking place...
