Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica)

Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica)
Taken in Cologne Zoo (Germany)
The last females in Cologne where killed by a fox (somewhere around 2007ish), and the two remaining males have both since died as well.

I believe Moscow only have a tiny herd (1.2?) in their off-show breeding area out of the city and there is one very large group at Askania Nova (somewhere near/in Kazachstan?). Zootierliste will have the exact info...

Askania Nova is rather closer-to-home than Kazakhstan - it's in the Ukraine. :)

Zootierliste agrees with 1.2 at Moscow's breeding centre; it lists about 50 at Askania Nova.

If the last females hadn't died, does anyone believe there would have been a future for the species in coogne? Maguari, did you ever yourself see a saiga at cologne?

No I don't think there would have been a future for this species at Koln,if the females had died,as there wasn't much chance of them getting any new blood in to keep the species going,as for did Maguari see them at Koln he certainly did as he was stood along side me,whilst I was drooling over the last male!
