Most range restricted of the genus. It is considered Least Concern due to records existing in degraded habitat being taken to mean that habitat loss & degradation are not a threat, which for a habitat specialist in Madagascar feels like a bold claim. It's therefore a species with potential to benefit from an organised ex-situ programme, but there are very few individuals even in private hands in Europe, fewer still in zoos.
@pangolin12 they were never exported in large numbers, mostly only as a few individuals mislabelled among Chalarodon, so I've heard. Origin was almost certainly originally the private trade.
