Interest shot, Hix. Whilst tourism in sub Saharan Africa is rightly driven by its abundant wildlife there are other great things to see too, from a historic perspective.
It must have been a tremendous period of time to be in Zimbabwe, with all the hope of political change, rapid economic growth, before the worst horrors of the Mugabe regime.

At the time I was 22 and young, with a strong interest in wildlife and no real interest in politics or change. I picked up a brief history of the previous few years while travelling around, but my main focus apart from wildlife was the guerillas who had been attacking and killing tourists in the south.

Of course, it got much worse once Bobby went power-mad. :(

I had no idea that level of civil unrest was occurring in the mid 80s. You learn something new everyday!

It was only in the South, and when I was there the main risk was the road between Bulawayo and Hwange. I remember a couple of Brits were stopped and killed. Also the road south of Bulawayo to the border was dangerous. They were Ndebele, and were unhappy that Mugabe, a Shona, was their new leader.

:p
