Cologne Zoo - Temporary Monkey House

Part of the temporary monkey house in Cologne Zoo, Germany. This house was built in 2009 to accommodate the South American primates while their own house is being renovated. This house is clearly about function rather than looks. The species living in there when this picture was taken were red howler monkeys, white-faced sakis, yellow-breasted capuchins, golden lion tamarins and saddleback tamarins.

As far as I have understood the plan is to use this house as a refuge for abandoned/confiscated exotic pets once the monkeys move out again.

I saw this house in May - it's actually very good for a temporary home.

Do they still have Rock Cavies (Kerodon rupestris) in with the monkeys as well?

Ah yes, I forgot about the rock cavies! Yes, at least they were there when I last visited in July.

And you are quite right, it is very good for a temporary house. It may be very ugly but it is functional and quite spacious.

These temporary enclosures are better than permanent exhibits at many other zoos!:)

These are actually splendid constructions, a veritable combination of the indoors and the outdoors. The major fault is lack of access to natural foliage.Wonderful for many of the smaller and mid-sized species. If anybody is considering replicating this idea, I have one suggestion for the sake of visitors - incorporate a stepped-back or staggered design between enclosures, to offer more viewing perspectives.
