Harbor Wetlands Construction May 2024

I'm a big fan of this project and I think that it will be a cool addition to what is already a fantastic aquarium. The only thing that makes me raise my eyebrows is the cost, which is $14 million. It's amazing how expensive construction is in certain U.S. cities.

It's crazy how much the cost ballooned since announced in 2016. Originally, the project was to fill the entirety of the slip between both piers, soften the bulwarks, and add green space to the back of each pier. But as the pandemic raged, supply chains worsened, and the glass pyramid project moved up in priorities, the aquarium ended up with a much more scaled down project. At the end of the day, this will be a beautiful addition.

As a side note, Baltimore has had some really neat water quality projects over the years, such as the trash wheel family. These floating wetlands in particular have inspired other projects, including plans from private developers to ring the entire Inner Harbor.
