[CONFIRMATION NEEDED] Eurasian Wigeon and Possible American Wigeon ~ Karuizawa

12/27/2023
While reviewing my old photos, I found this one female that seems like a female American Wigeon. While I am not 100% certain, this individual has all the necessary traits distinguishing American Wigeons from their Eurasian counterparts. I would be very grateful if anyone could confirm this possible rarity. In case you are wondering, the American Wigeon in question is the female with the greyish head behind the male Eurasian Wigeon.

This certainly looks like a female American Wigeon, but I can't give you a 100% definitive identification. Although I've seen hundreds of female American Wigeons, I've only seen a few captive female Eurasian Wigeons for comparison and I don't know much about their molt patterns. The head plumage is sufficiently gray to suggest an American Wigeon but the females are so difficult to tell apart that I'm not 100% certain.
