Leopard Seal (Hydrurga leptonyx)

Oriental Bay, Wellington, 28 Sept 2023
The fountain in the back is the Carter Fountain, installed in 1973, which has a jet 16 metres high. It just happened to be there so I included it as a backdrop in a couple of the photos I took.

There are Leopard Seals every year, but they are tricky to actually see because they usually only stay in any one place for a day and then they move on. Very occasionally you get a long-staying one like Owha who first took up residence in Auckland Harbour in 2016 and is still there.

There is a Facebook page for Leopard Seal sightings in NZ - Leopard Seals NZ
